high-rise, apartment building, 2009_construction
250-foot, 24-story postmodern residential building completed in 2009. Designed by Stephen B. Jacobs Group, it consists of two towers, one on 38th Street and one on 37th, connected by a low-rise section in the middle of the block. The south tower is offset to the west. Jacobs the also the designer of the similar but smaller Crystal Green “sister” development one block north.
The facades are clad in buff-colored brick, grey metal and glass. On the north tower, the base rises nine floors before setting back to the main tower portion, which is also set back at the east and west ends. The base is cut away at one section near the west end, leading to the main entrance and main facade of the tower wall, rising straight up to the roof line. The entrance has a revolving door set within a glass surround, itself framed by a curtain wall of glass panels. A copper wall-mounted lantern adorns both of the side walls enclosing the entrance, both of which have a small single-window on floors 3-9. To the left of the entrance, the base has two groups of six bays, divided by a narrower bay. Each of the larger bays has a tripartite window with a metal vent at the bottom. At the ground floor, there are storefronts, and the piers rest on granite bases. A projecting band courses tops the 2nd floor, with another band course at the 9th-floor setback. To the right of the entrance is a narrower base section of four bays, with a parking garage entrance in the two westernmost bays.
Above the entrance, there is a wide bay of windows with grey metal frames, flanked by a bay of single-windows on each side. The wide bay continues up to the roof line, while the single-windows become tripartite windows where the bays widen above the setback of the base. To the west, the corner bay has wrap-around windows with a narrow chamfered corner. To the west is a narrow bay of single-windows, then two bays of tripartite windows with chamfered inner corners to a narrow inset area between them. Further east, there are two bays of tripartite windows grouped with double-windows, also edged on the inner corners by chamfers leading back to a wider inset area. At the far east end is another bay of single-windows, and a corner bay of wrap-around windows with a narrow chamfer. The east and west elevations of the north tower have a bay of double-windows and one of single-windows between the chamfered corners.
The south tower on 37th Street is very similar in design. The base only extends up to the 8th floor, instead of nine, and the lobby entrance at the cutout section is plainer. There is a parking garage entrance to the left of the entrance. The tower portion matches that of the north building.
The landscaped courtyard between the towers includes fountains, gardens, a glass solarium and pool. The facades of both towers facing the center of the block and courtyard in between are clad in similar materials. Both of these facades also have multiple inset notches, creating the effect of bay windows. The complex contains a total of 569 total apartment units. The ground floor retail space is occupied by a dry cleaners, and Casa Nonna restaurant.
