USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York
 neighbourhood, invisible

Chelsea is a large neighborhood on the West Side of the midtown area of New York City's Borough of Manhattan. It is located to the south of Hell's Kitchen (aka Clinton) and the Garment District at 34th. Street, and north of Greenwich Village, and the Meatpacking District that centers on West 14th Street. It is bounded to the west by West street along the Hudson River bank and by 6th. Avenue (formally the Avenue of the Americas)including the 'NoMad' and Flatiron districts, to its east. The neighborhood is part of Manhattan Community Board 4 and Manhattan Community Board 5. It is named after the former residence, "Chelsea" of the Moore family.

The neighborhood is primarily residential, with a mix of tenements, apartment blocks, city housing projects, townhouses and renovated rowhouses, and its many retail businesses reflect the ethnic and social diversity of the population. The western part of Chelsea has more recently become a center of the New York art world, with many art galleries located in both new buildings and rehabilitated warehouses. As a consequence it is now thought of by many as a sub-neighborhood (West Chelsea) in its own right.
