Canarsie (New York City, New York)

USA / New York / New York City, New York
 neighbourhood, draw only border

Neighborhood between Paerdegat Basin to the west, Jamaica Bay to the south, Spring Creek to the east, East 108 Street to it's northeast and the Long Island Railroad right-of-way to the north. Canarsie is also often referred to as "The Small Town in the Big City".

Maps from circa 1890 show an irregular, swampy shoreline of the south part of Canarsie bordering Jamaica Bay. The construction of the Golden City Amusement Park near Seaview Avenue circa 1900 sparked the filling of wetlands and the building of the bulkhead and pier that now define the shoreline. The Canarsie population through 1910 was mostly fishermen, Italian immigration defined the community from 1910 through 1950, large numbers of Jewish families moved in from 1950 through 1980, and since that time West Indian families have made up most home buyers.
