Manhattan is the most densely populated borough of New York City, New York, coterminous with New York County. With a 2000 population of 1,537,195 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.47 km²), it is the most densely populated county in the United States at 66,940 residents per square mile (25,846/km²). The borough consists of Manhattan Island, Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Ward's Island, Governor's Island plus several much smaller islands, and a small section on the mainland adjacent to the Bronx called Marble Hill which was cut off from the rest of the main island when the Harlem River Shipping Canal was dugout in the 1890s.
To the majority of visitors, both domestic and international - Manhattan is the most prolific and best known of New York City's boroughs since it contains many of the city's internationally known landmarks and attractions, and to all intents and purposes - Manhattan IS New York. Locals usually refer to Manhattan simply as "The City", and the term "going into the City" generally means they are travelling into Manhattan.
