hotel, skyscraper, condominiums, mixed-used building, 2019 construction
1,010-foot, 72-story modernist mixed-use building completed in 2019. Designed by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, it is clad in limestone and glass. In addition to residential condominiums, it has a hotel operated by Equinox and office space.
Transitions in the tower's program are expressed as a series of setbacks that twist around the tower. Terraces at each setback create outdoor gardens that become smaller and more frequent toward the top of the tower. The mullions at the base (of Bavarian Jura limestone) grow progressively narrower as the tower rises. The first setback is above the 8th floor, on the south and east sides. The next is above the 19th floor on the west side. The southwest corner begins to take a curved, circular shape above the 35th floor, and the other corners follow suit higher up. Each setback has a glass railing. At the south facade of the 8-story base, the center bulges inward beginning at the 7th floor, and sucking in more toward the ground floor, where the main entrance is recessed atop a splayed set of steps and landscaping. The east facade has a similar sucked-in area at the base, with the hotel entrance centered here.
The tower's sculptural crown is almost entirely glass, with large notches carved into its mostly curved surfaces.
The lobby contains Flowers, a tapestry by Swedish artist Helena Hernmarck. Retail is on levels 2, 4, and 5 and consists of an outpost of the Hospital for Special Surgery focused on physical therapy and a SoulCycle. Six floors of office space starts from level 8 that serve as the new headquarters for Related's subsidiary Equinox Fitness. The hotel, managed by Equinox, has 212 guest rooms (including 48 suites) on the 24th floor to the 38th. Levels 3, 6, and 7 are home to a 60,000-square-foot gym and spa also operated by Equinox. The upper 36 floors contain 135 condominiums, with the top-floor penthouse including a wedge-shaped terrace.
