USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / West 23rd Street, 405-465
high-rise, apartment building, 1930_construction, housing cooperative

217-foot, 18-story cooperative-apartment building completed in 1930. Designed by Farrar & Watmough, it spans the entire block, with the midblock buildings completed first, then the corner buildings in 1930-31.

London Terrace Gardens was the dream of real estate mogul Henry Mandel. In the late 1920s, when the American economy was still strong, Mandel began acquiring land in Chelsea to build the largest apartment building New York-and the world had ever seen. The complex contains 1,665 apartments. In 1948, the current owners purchased the ten interior buildings. The central buildings surrounding the one-acre garden courtyard were named London Terrace Gardens - they contain rental apartments; the end buildings are called London Terrace Towers and operated as a co-op.

The end towers have 2-story limestone bases with round-arched windows and entrances; the rest of the facade is clad in dark red brick with a variety of stone, brown brick and terra-cotta Romanesque ornament. The buildings rise vertically up to the 15th floors; the taller end towers have setback floors above this. Each building section is topped by a tall, square tower. An underground parking garage is built into the complex.

Notable residents include Chelsea Clinton, Debbie Harry, Annie Leibovitz, Bill Hader, and Susan Sontag. Some of the ground floor commercial occupants include a Chase Bank branch, Chelsea Barbers, Arkins apparel, La Promenade bistro, Chelsea Foot Care Center, The Pantry Deli & Cafe, Joe - The Art of Coffee, a Capital One Bank branch, a wine & liquor store, Gristedes supermarket, London Terrace Cleaners, Carol Bowden Salon, and a United States Post Office.
