 apartment building  Add category

7-story residential building completed in 1969. It is clad in red brick, with the ground floor set partially below grade, and lined with restaurant storefronts along Irving Place. The residential entrances are at the north end, with a doorway at the 2nd floor, accessed by a set of stairs below a black canvas canopy, and through a gated courtyard entered from 17th Street. The lowered ground level has exterior dining areas projecting out from the rest of the facade, topped by canvas awnings. The upper floors have six bays of narrow double-windows, each of which has an iron railing across its base, and an air-conditioning unit surrounded by brick in a lower quadrant of the window opening. The middle bays are grouped into two pairs, with the end bays spaced farther apart. At the 2nd floor, next to the Irving Place entrance, a large, projecting studio window replaces one of the window bays, with a sloped metal roof.

The ground floor on the south facade on 17th Street has a couple of low, square windows and a black wooden door set down a set of steps, with a black canvas awning running atop the ground floor. The upper floors have two bays of windows like those on the east facade. At the west end is a small 1-story extension of the ground floor with a service doorway, and then the gate into the courtyard that the building partially wraps around. There are several more bays of the same windows. The middle of the rear, south-facing wall has two small, circular windows at the top floor, paying homage to the much smaller, older building in front.

The building contains 56 apartment units. The ground floor at the east end is occupied by L'Americana restaurant, and Pierre Loti Wine Bar.
