107-foot, 8-story contemporary modern residential building completed in 2014. Designed by BKSK Architects, the bulk of the building sits on 13th Street, but there are two narrower commercial wings extending through the block to 14th Street - a quite narrow 3-story wing and a wider 2-story wing. The building takes its name from the historic Jefferson Theatre that once stood on this site. Erected in 1912 and opened in 1913 as the B.F. Keith’s vaudeville theater, the narrow theater entrance at 214 East 14th Street was nestled between two tenements with the bulk of the building (the theater’s auditorium) located on 13th Street side of the property, accounting for the layout of the current structure. The Jefferson operated into the late 1970s as a theater, when it was closed for good. It stood empty for decades and was finally demolished in 2000.
The new Jefferson building is clad in variegated grey brick, black metal, and glass. The facade on 13th Street is symmetrical, aside from a slight shift around the main entrance. The center section is 7 stories tall, flanked by 6-story wings and all these gray-brick sections are topped by a 1-story glass-clad floor. In all, there are 14 brick piers resting on granite bases. The piers that delineate between the wings and the center section are edged in black brick, and there is a horizontal band of black brick at the top of the 2nd floor, across the middle section. Each of the bays has windows with multiple panes of varying widths, in black metal framing. There are black metal spandrels panels between floors at the middle section on the 3rd-7th floors, and also at the next bay to either side on the 2nd-6th floors. Metal railings front the middle bays at the 2nd floor, where the windows extend down farther. A suspended bronze metal and glass canopy covers both the entrance bay and the one to the east. A modern black metal cornice caps the roof line at the middle section.
On 14th Street both wings are clad in brick with black metal storefronts, window framing, and cornice lines. The narrower west wing is occupied by Dunkin', and the east wing by City MD. The building contains 83 condominium units.
