The Caroline Apartments (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas), 696-712
 apartment building, 2002_construction, postmodern (architecture)

219-foot, 19-story postmodern residential building completed in 2002 for Pan Am Equities. Designed by Costas Kondylis & Partners LLP Architects and Richard Cook & Associates, the building consists of a 9-story midrise section fronting 6th Avenue and 22nd Street, and a 19-story tower portion fronting 23rd Street. The entire building is faced in grey-white stone on the first two floors, with red brick and grey metal paneling above. The roof line features grey metal pergolas, and there is a rooftop deck. The north and south wings surround a central landscaped 4th-floor courtyard. Almost unnoticeable embedded in the second story façade of The Caroline apartment building is a wonderful bronze relief bust of William Shakespeare to honor the former site of Booth's Theater. The bust was added when the building was converted into McCreery’s Dry Goods store in 1895.

The Sixth Avenue facade has a 2-story grey stone base, with piers resting on black stone bases. The center four bays contain a grand entrance with a suspended silver metal marquee. The facade spans 16 bays, with red brick piers above the base organizing the outer bays into groups of two. The individual bays are separated by pale-green metal pilasters, which also frame all the center bays. Spandrel panels of the same metal alternate every other floors with narrower horizontal metal framing members. The eight center bays set back above the 8th floor, where the brick piers at the outer bays have simple stone ornament.

The 23rd Street elevation has six bays along the 9-story midrise section (at the west), divided into two halves by red brick piers. The bays follow the design of those on Sixth Avenue. To the east, the tower portion is connected by a single recessed bay, and spans 16 bays wide, with brick piers grouping the bays mostly into pairs, but also with two single-bay sections. The base matches that on the avenue, and there is another grand entrance with a silver marquee.

The 9-story 22nd Street facade is 15 bays wide, organized into groups of three. There is a slightly smaller entrance with a marquee, a freight dock toward the east end, and a parking garage entrance/exit at the far eastern end in a 1-story extension. Within each regular bay, there are three-paned windows. Some of the interior bays facing the courtyard have projecting balconies.

The ground level is occupied by Outback Steakhouse, Lifetime Fitness, Best Buy, Cosi restaurant, Paris Baguette, and Chick-Fil-A.
