Art Deco (architecture), apartment building
6-story Art-Deco residential building completed in 1938. Designed by Joseph Mitchell, it is clad in yellow-beige brick. The front facade has a recessed center section, with the main entrance in the middle, set in a limestone surround. It has a geometric iron-and-glass door between curved, fluted quarter-cylinders, covered by a black metal canopy. Above the canopy is a carved panel with the address number 245 surrounded by floral patterns. To either side of the doorway is a single-window with the glass panes in a similar abstract geometric pattern, and the limestone surround is topped by a carved floral band. The upper floors above the entrance have six bays of single-windows, with the middle two set slightly higher, and the outer ones wrapping around the corners to a further-recessed bay of double-windows on either side. There are metal air-conditioning vents below these double-windows as well as the single-windows next to the middle pair. The further-recessed bays also has very narrow, smaller windows to the outside of the double-windows.
The non-recessed wings at both ends of the facade each have four middle bays of single-windows, and double-window end bays, with the inner ones wrapping around the corner onto the side walls of these wings. Behind them the side elevations have another single-window. The ground-floor windows have iron grilles, and there are more vents below some of the window bays. Both outer wings have black metal fire escapes running down the middle two bays.
The site slopes down somewhat at the west end of the building, exposing a couple low basement windows at the west wing, and a basement door at the far west end, down a few steps. The facade is fronted by landscaping behind a black iron railing with a similar pattern to the windows and door at the main entrance. The ground floor is topped by a band of brick laid at ends, and there are two grooved bands framing the top and bottom of the 6th floor. Partial 7th-floor penthouse units have been added onto the outer wings, faced in lighter beige stucco.
The building contains 67 apartment units.
