apartment building
Add category
9-story cooperative-apartment building completed in 1922 as a factory for a fur company. Designed by XXXX, it is clad in buff-colored brick above a 3-story limestone base. The facade is organized into three bays, with the main entrance in the center bay. It has double-doors of glass panes in a brown metal grid that fits into a larger grid, slightly recessed below a stone panel that reads "GROFF BUILDING". There are metal-and-glass storefronts in the other two bays.
The 2nd & 3rd floors have tripartite windows in the western two bays (wider in the west end bay) and a 4-window bay on the east side, each with black metal mullions. The stone spandrels between these floors are each decorated with a small rosette, and above the 3rd-floor windows are keystone-like decorations and more rosettes above the piers, which have oval wreaths and bellflowers near the tops. The base is capped by a dentiled band course.
The upper floors have triple-windows with black mullions, with the center bay smaller. There are pairs of small vents in the brick spandrels. More strings of bellflowers decorate the piers at the 8th floor, with a modillioned stone band course setting off the top floor, which has stone piers. The spandrels at the top of the 9th floor are stone, like those between the 2nd & 3rd floors. An urn caps each pier at the roof line.
The east elevation is brick, with two bays of paired windows in the middle, and two single-windows on each side. The building contains 16 apartments. The ground floor is occupied by Sharnelle Furs, and Empire Cut Flower shop.
