Comme des Garçons

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / West 22nd Street, 520
store / shop, interesting place, apartment building, 1860s construction

3-story residential/mercantile building erected in 1866 for architect/builder William H. Smith. The facade is clad in red brick, with segmental-arched windows with brick headers on the 3rd floor. The roof line is a brick parapet, peaked at the middle, with a metal coping. At the 2nd floor, signs still hang from the fire escape for a former business, Heavenly Body Works.

The real interest of the building, however, is the futuristic entrance tunnel to the designer apparel store Comme des Garçons, which occupied the ground floor. The ground floor is covered with colorful graffiti, with the tunnel located slightly left of center, under a brick arch. The tunnel angles to the right, with LED lights in the ground, and lined with reflective, hammered aluminum. Halfway through is an oblong glass door. Inside is an irregular labyrinth of futuristic, curved white walls.
