Edwin Forrest House

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / West 22nd Street, 436-438
apartment building, 1830s construction, Greek Revival (architecture)

3-story Greek-revival residential building completed in 1835 for James Coggill. Today this mansion is called "The Edwin Forrest House", honoring the famous actor who lived there from 1838 to 1849. Forrest lived here until he and his wife separated, prior to the notorious divorce proceedings. He sold the house, March I, 1856, to Philippe Pistor, a son-in-law of Don Alonzo Cushman, and the Pistor family of twelve lived there for a number of years. Mrs. Pistor sold the house, in 1879,i to the James F. Drummond family. The Drummonds lovingly maintained the interior of the house, even insuring that the door enframement of an elevator, installed in 1932, was Greek in style. The family sold the house, in 1945 and it was converted into apartments.

The building is clad in orange brick above a brownstone basement that now serves as the ground floor. It is four bays wide, with the entrance in the 2nd bay from the east, down a couple of steps from the sidewalk, with black wood-and-glass double-doors and transom. The window directly above the doorway replaces the former parlor-floor entrance, evidenced by the different shade of replacement brick built around it. The windows have black stone sills and lintels, and there are iron railings around the top floor windows. The building is crowned by a simple black metal roof cornice.
