Venetian Building

 apartment building, 1887_construction

5-story residential building completed in 1887. Designed by William Schickel as a store, it is clad in red brick with contrasting brownstone trim. At the ground floor, brownstone piers with rock-faced bands and carved arabesque panels at the top flank an iron-framed storefront. The tall storefront is framed by a foliated molding and surmounted by a cornice with dentils and an egg-and-dart molding.

Above, brick piers divide the facade into three vertical bays of square-headed window openings. Four flush stone bands intersect the 2nd floor, the uppermost band forming a lintel course outlined by a simple molding. The lintel course is repeated at the 3rd floor, capped by a string course. The 2nd & 3rd, and the 4th & 5th floors are separated by inset brick spandrel panels. A flush stone band runs across the top of the 4th-floor windows. At the 5th floor, the two end piers are topped with stylized Corinthian capitals and the two center piers with paired rosettes. A paneled frieze with festoons caps the 5th floor and is surmounted by a modillioned black iron cornice. The building was converted to apartments sometime in the late 1900s. The ground floor is occupied by PedalHouse.
