apartment building, 1891_construction, Renaissance Revival (architecture)
6-story Northern Renaissance-revival residential building completed in 1891. Designed by Alfred Zucker as a factory and warehouse, it features a crowning copper cornice and parapet (restored in 1985) and brownstone piers topped by carved gargoyles. Its four bays of cast-iron are painted bright red, between brownstone end piers that are rusticated on the lower floors and foliated at the upper floors. There is a continuous dentiled sill at the base of the 3rd & 6th floors (the 6th-floor sill also features masked brackets). The 5th floor has round-arched windows, and the 6th floor has eight narrower round-arched windows. The crowning copper cornice and parapet was restored in 1985, and has scrolled brackets, moldings and the applied numerals "1889". The brownstone piers are topped by carved gargoyles. The building remained in industrial use until 1985, when it was converted to apartments. The ground floor is occupied by Shakespeare & Co. book sellers.
