SoHo (New York City, New York)

place with historical importance, neighbourhood, invisible

SoHo (a contraction of and meaning the district 'South of Houston Street') is a neighborhood in the downtown area of New York City's Borough of Manhattan. This polygon includes also the district of Hudson Square to the west, and lying south of West Houston Street, now thought of as a sub-neighborhood of SoHo.

The name SoHo is a play on that of the famous west London shopping district, justifying its name as being the area South of Houston (pronounced HOUSE-tin) Street. It was the first such mildly amusing naming acronym that has been followed by other new neighborhood descriptions such as TriBeCa and DUMBO. Before its incarnation as a trendy locale, it was known as the Cast Iron District.
