5/6-story Beaux-arts powerhouse completed in 1906 by the New York Edison Co. It was built in conjuction with an additional power plant on Lafayette Street, adjoining the Crosby facility. On the Crosby side, it has a concrete stoop, with a recessed entryway, and is clad in red brick with white stone details. There is also a metal cornice above the ground floor, and a cornice at the top with large modillions. The 3rd & 4th floors have the central windows combined under a 2-story segmental-arch with a keystone. All the windows are recessed. The top floor has three narrow round-arched windows in the center and two wider ones on the sides.
The Lafayette side is clad in rusticated stone on the ground floor, with grey brick above. A double-heights central window spans the 2nd-3rd floors, with a round-arched window above with a keystone. A black metal cornice with large modillions projects from the top of the 5th floor, above which the top floor is capped by a parapet with a triangular pediment in the center.
Through a series of mergers, this power company became Consolidated Edison, which owned 55 Crosby until 1971, after which it was converted to loft space. It was then occupied by a variety or galleries and artists, including Frank Gehry, 55 Crosby Street Gallery, the Joni Weyl Gallery, and the Leo Castelli Gallery.
