Police Building Condominium (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / Centre Street, 240
condominium, interesting place, apartment building, 1909_construction, movie / film / TV location, Beaux-Arts (architecture)

This beautiful example of Beaux-Arts architecture was built as the headquarters of the New York Police Department. The 8-story domed building was completed in 1909, and designed by Hoppin & Koen. The facade features stone rustications and quoins. The main entrance has three large round-arches with scrolled keystones, flanked by a pair of rectangular windows with keystones. Round-arched windows line the rest of the ground floor, with square-headed windows at the basement level. The entrance is also decorated by wall sconces and a pair of reclining lion statues.

Above, there are 2-story fluted Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment reading "POLICE DEPARTMENT" across its base. The 2nd floor windows have triangular pediments, except for the center one with a rounded pediment. The ends of the building have projecting piers with a return of the fluted Corinthian columns, and a triangular pediment over each end. At its center, the building is crowned by a dome with smaller columns, two clock faces, and a copper top with a cupola. The building is currently managed by Douglas Elliman.

The police department occupied the building from 1909 until 1973. It was converted into luxury condominiums in 1988 by the firm of Ehrenkranz Group & Eckstut. The penthouse has previously been home to both Calvin Klein and Steffi Graf. The exterior was used as a filming location for White Collar S02 E12 "What Happens in Burma" where Neal and Peter are walking discussing a case. The front lions are prominently featured behind them.
