school, skyscraper, apartment building, 1975_construction
433-foot, 44-story residential building completed in 1975. Designed by Horowitz & Chun, Confucius Plaza is a limited-equity housing co-operative in Chinatown, Manhattan, containing 762 apartments. The building also includes the Public School 124, shops, community space, a day care center, and an underground parking facility. It was constructed at a cost of $38,387,000.
The co-op members are almost exclusively Chinese Americans. The building forms a large arc facing Division Street, with the 44-floor eastern portion of the entity towering over the 19-floor western portion facing the Bowery. The facade is of uniform reddish-brown brick cladding, and the massing is enhanced by protruding portions and set-backs. The ground floor along the Bowery is lined with storefronts that are recessed behind an arcade of squared piers. There are a variety of windows (singles, double, triple and quadruple units), all framed in aluminum, and almost every group with a small, square vent below it.
The main entrance in the curved section of facade facing the Bowery is at a 2-story recessed section, with rounded 1-story columns behind the 2-story brick piers. The western half of the towers rise to 18 floors, while the eastern half extends all the way up to the 44th floor, and overlooks the 3-story wing extending toward the Manhattan Bridge, that houses the Yung Wing Public School and a narrow entrance to an underground parking garage. On the plaza in front of the building is a statue of Confucius by Liu Shih.
