 apartment building, 1860s construction

5-story residential building completed in 1860. It was built for Thomas Lewis, and its facade is identical to 38 Walker Street next door, which was built two years earlier. The upper floors are residential, while the lower part of the building houses David Gage String Instruments, selling and restoring basses and cellos since 1978. The red-painted cast-iron ground floor has fluted Corinthian columns and pilasters. The upper floors are clad in white stone, with quoins at the edges. The windows are round-arched, and have sills with corbelled feet. A metal fire escape is shared with 38 Walker, and the building is crowned by a bracketed metal roof cornice.
