133-foot, 10-story Renaissance-revival cooperative-apartment building completed in 1899. Designed by Robert Maynicke as a store-and-loft building, it is L-shaped and faced in limestone and terra-cotta.
On Fifth Avenue the 3-story base is flanked by large 3-story stone pilasters which support a dentiled cornice. At the 2nd and 3rd floors the 3-window bay is slightly recessed with metal spandrel panels between the two floors. Flanking the 4th floor are smoothly rusticated buff-colored brick blocks which support an ornamented cornice with terra-cotta swags. The three windows are separated by brick mullions, crowned by consoles. A frieze with a wave motif completes this story.
Buff-colored brick pilasters on stone pedestals flank floors 5-9. The windows are separated by brick mullions and rest on dentiled sills. The mullions of the 9th floor are crowned by consoles which, with the decorative pilaster capitals, support a cornice spanning the facade. The three windows of the 10th floor are separated by pilasters, crowned by continuous arches, and flanked by decorative terra-cotta panels. A heavy, dark-grey, bracketed roof cornice completes the composition.
The West 19th Street facade repeats the pattern of the Fifth Avenue facade with slight differences. The 7-bay facade includes two fire escapes, and several older projecting show windows at the shopfront level. Paired pilasters mark the division between the 3rd and 4th bays from the western edge of the building.
Once known as the Bradbury Building, it replaced the Congregation Shearith Israel synagogue. Early tenants of the new building included milliners, upholsterers and a piano manufacturer. It was converted to residential in the late 1900s. The ground floor is occupied by Bottlerocket wine & spirits, Florisity florist, and American Apparel.
