Established in 1957 as an Auxiliary Radar Site in the BAR Sector of the DEW Line, the BAR-2 or Shingle Point radar site operated as both its own long-range radar site and a local control point for the "I" or Intermediate stations at BAR-C/Tununuk Camp and BAR-B/Stokes Point. Remaining in service with the DEW Line through June 1989, the station was simultaneously deactivated from its DEW role and activated with the North Warning System and began operations as a Long Range Radar station equipped with AN/FPS-117 radar systems.

With its NWS station largely co-located within its DEW Line era buildings, the BAR-2 site is a minimally-attended radar site and is accessed by contractors, military personnel and technicians by helicopter. As of 2005 the site is under review by both the Canadian and Yukon Territory government for environmental remediation.
