Former PIN-3 DEW Line Radar Site

Canada / Manitoba / Snow Lake /
former air force base, early warning radar

Activated in 1957 as an Auxiliary radar site in the PIN sector of the DEW Line, the PIN-3 or Lady Franklin Point site spanned 1,487 acres of land at its maximum size and like many other DEW Line sites was equipped with a large airfield and seaside beaching area for resupply. Operating under the direct control of the PIN-Main site at Cape Parry to the West, PIN-3 was also briefly responsible for supporting the operations at two smaller "I" or Intermediate sites at PIN-D and PIN-E until they were shut down in 1963.

Operating through 1989 as part of the DEW Line, the PIN-3 site ended its days of manned operations with the activation of a co-located North Warning System radar site in June of that year and has since seen the majority of its DEW Line infrastructure razed. Following a large fire at the NWS station in January of 2000, the entire site underwent site environmental remediation as part of the NWS station rebuild and almost all of the DEW Line station infrastructure has been removed.
