 airport, former air force base

Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport is a public airport operating on the site of the former Wurtsmith US Air Force Base in northeastern Iosco County in the state of Michigan.

When in USAF Commission as Wurtsmith Air Force Base, the facility was the largest continental B-52 Stratofortress base in the SAC command, and hosted elements of the 4026th Strategic Wing (1958–1961), 40th Air Division (1959–1988), 920th Air Refueling Wing (June 1960-April 1993) and the 379th Bombardment Wing (1961–1991). In its waning days prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the base became famous for serving as the launching point for the majority of the B-52's used during the bombing campaigns of the first Gulf War. Selected for closure by the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, the base formally decomissioned on June 30th, 1993 and was transferred to the State of Michigan.

Now serving primarily as a cargo and light general aviation airport with no scheduled passenger services, Oscoda-Wurtsmith Aiport is home to Kalitta Air's heavy maintenance division, the Yankee Air Force Museum Wurtsmith Division and several private aircraft interests. The former base housing and administrative buildings are now used by the Aune Medical Center, Alcona Health Center Dental Clinic, Alpena Community College, and numerous private businesses. The former military housing units have been refurbished by the Village of Oscoda, and now serve as a major population base in the Oscoda area.
