Activated in 1957 as an Auxiliary radar site in the PIN sector of the DEW Line, the PIN-4 or Byron Bay site spanned 5,800 acres of land located on an outcrop of rock rising above a rolling plateau. Operating under the direct control of the PIN-Main site at Cape Parry to the West, PIN-4 also supported the operations at the smaller "I" or Intermediate site at PIN-E/Cape Peel until it was shut down in 1963.

Shut down with the balance of the original DEW Line sites in 1993, PIN-4 was officially deactivated on August 21st and left in caretaker status, as it was not selected for reuse as a host site for a North Warning System radar station. Remaining largely abandoned for the next decade, the site and its infrastructure was razed and environmentally remediated in the early 2000's.
