Pogo is 85% owned by Sumittomo Metal and Mining Company Limited and 15% by Sumitomo Corporation since Teck Resources Limited sold their share in the project in 2009. Exploration at the Pogo Mine began in 1990 then gold deposits were discovered in 1994, and once reserves were verified the mine was constructed with initial production in 2006.

The mine is an underground mine utilizing a cut and fill drift method. The mill treats 2,500 tpd to produce 1,000 ounces of gold per day, and the milling operation includes grinding, sulfide flotation, paste thickening, Leach/CIP, cyanide detoxification, tailings filtration, a paste mix plant for underground paste backfill, water treatment, and gravity recovery.
