Dawson City was the capital of Yukon Territory, Canada from its founding in 1898 until 1952, when the seat was moved to Whitehorse. The population was 1,327 at the 2006 census.
The population of the Dawson City area exploded to 40,000 during the Klondike gold rush in 1896-98. By 1902 when Dawson incorporated as a city, the population was only 5,000 and still declining.
