oxbow lake, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place, historic site
In 1900 Danish prospector Johannes Petersen's crew used dynamite to open a bypass at this oxbow in the North Fork of the Fortymile River. Straightening the channel and draining the oxbow. Their plan of mining the dried oxbow for gold failed, as it contained little gold and was prone to landslides.
Petersen's cabin still stands, and is maintained by the US Bureau of Land Management as a historic site. The site is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
