The Bering Strait connects the Arctic Ocean (the Chukchi Sea) and the Pacific Ocean (Bering Sea), separating the two mainland Eurasia and North American continents. In the middle of the Strait are the Diomede Islands. The western island of the pair (Ratmanov) is owned by Russia, and the eastern island (Krusenstern) is part of the United States. A sea border between Russia and the United States (as well as the International Date Line) runs between the islands. The width of the Strait is 86 kilometres, extreme-Dezhnev capes (Eurasia) and the Prince of Wales's (North America). Greatest depth-91 m. The Strait was crossed for the first time by Semen Dezhnev in 1648, although it is named in honor of Vitus Bering (a Danish Navigator serving with Russia) who passed through it in 1728 at the time of the first Kamchatka Expedition.
