4-story Greek-revival residential building completed in 1834 as a 3-story townhouse for James N. Wells, who lived here until 1854. This was one of the earliest houses built in the neighborhood, and now houses apartments - since it was raised an additional floor in the early 1900s. It is clad in red-painted brick with a brownstone basement. The narrower west facade is three bays wide; the north facade has four bays grouped toward the east end. The entry is on 9th Avenue, with a stoop leading to a classic Greek-revival doorway with rounded Doric columns. The windows have angled stone lintels on both facades, and the building is topped by a black metal cornice with paired brackets on the avenue side. Fire escapes are located on both the avenue and 20th Street facades.
