university, Art Deco (architecture), apartment building
14-story Art Deco residential building completed in 1931. Designed by Schwartz & Gross, it is clad in buff-colored brick with brown accent brick above a stuccoed ground floor. The facade mixes larger square windows with smaller, narrow ones. The outer wings of each elevation rise vertically to the 10th floor, with the center section extending up to the 14th. Each of the piers in the center section is topped with a decorative panel. A number of external air conditioning units dots the facade.
The building was acquired by NYU in 1965 for use as faculty and rental apartments. Former New York mayor Ed Koch moved here in 1965, and continued living here after he won the election.
