Former LIZ-3/A-16 Radar Site

USA / Alaska / Wainwright /
former air force base, early warning radar

Established in 1994 as a replacement for the LIZ-3 DEW Line radar site, the modern LIZ-3 facility was an unmanned short-range radar site which operated as part of both the Alaska Radar System and the North Warning System until 2007. Equipped with AN/FPS-124 radar systems, the site was co-located with its predecessor and was operated remotely by the 611th Air Support Group out of Elmendorf Air Base until a site survey found the location to be suffering from extensive ground erosion due to permafrost liquefaction in the mid-2000's.

Idled in 2007 in lieu of more extensive repairs, the site remained mothballed for slightly over a year before the decision was made to fully deactivate and remove all infrastructure as part of a 2008 DEW Line site remediation. Today the LIZ-3/A-16 radar site no longer exists.
