military, early warning radar
Established and activated in October 1990 as a short-range radar site in the BAR Sector of the North Warning System, BAR-4 was for a period co-located with its DEW Line predecessor site and operated as a backup station for the longer range BAR-4 DEW site until the latter's shutdown in 1993.
Assuming total responsibility for the BAR-4 airspace thereafter, the site began autonomous operations under the control of the PIN-Main site at Cape Parry to the East. Following the removal and remediation of the DEW Line site infrastructure, BAR-4's AN/FPS-124 radars and support systems are now accessible for service and resupply by helicopter.
