railway, LIRR - Long Island Rail Road, railroad yard, draw only border
This rail yard serves as a layover and light maintenance yard for Long Island Railroad rolling stock, and contains several storage tracks, a six-track indoor shop for light maintenance, a 12-car car cleaning platform and employee facilities. Opened in 1987, the yard allows LIRR trains which arrive during the morning rush to layover until the evening, when they can be rapidly run out during the evening rush.
Presently the yard's air rights are under development for use as a mixed residential/commercial property after several attempts to build sporting venues met strident resistance from locals and fans alike. Hudson Yards opened in 2019 atop part of the yard. The second half has yet to commence.
