Serving Amtrak / NJ Transit / LIRR. Layover yard originally built by the Pennsylvania Railroad as part of the northern terminus of its mainline (now part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor) when the original Penn Station was built in 1910. The yard is equipped with a 'balloon track' for turning trains around with ease. The yard is owned and used by Amtrak but is used mainly by NJ Transit as this yard is a major terminal point for its system. The Long Island Railroad also accesses the yard, as it has a relatively new maintenance facility in the isolated southwest corner of the yard.
