Colonnade Row/La Grange Terrace (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / Lafayette Street, 428-434
interesting place, apartment building, historic landmark

NYC-landmarked row of four Greek-revival houses (dating from 1833) unified by a 2-story marble fluted Corinthian colonnade above the first floor by Towne & Davis. The second and third floors are recessed behind the colonnade; there are 2-story rooftop additions at Nos. 428, 430 and 434. The colonnade and rusticated ground floor span 12 bays

These four houses are the survivors from a row of nine marble-fronted residences that were among the grandest dwellings in New York at the time of their completion. They began to deteriorate in the post-Civil War era as the wealthy moved out of the neighborhood, and the houses were subdivided into apartments and commercial spaces. The five other buildings of the original row were demolished in 1917 for the construction of Wanamaker's garage and warehouse.

The Blue Man Group of New York now performs here at The Astor Place Theatre which is located within.
