North West Upgrading is a Calgary-based company that is building an independent heavy oil upgrader and refinery as a joint venture with Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. CNRL will provide 1/4 of the bitumen from its Horizon Oil Sands project near Fort McMurray, and the facility will also serve independent bitumen producers by making value added products from the Alberta government's bitumen royalties in kind (BRIK)--the Alberta government can receive royalties from oil sands producers as either cash or bitumen product, the latter is known as BRIK.

The project will be built in three phases to a design capacity of 231,000 barrels of bitumen blend feedstock. The first phase will begin production in 2015.

Value added products include:

Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel, a valuable market-ready fuel
Diluent, to blend with heavy oil & bitumen for transport
Low Sulphur Vacuum Gas Oil, for refining into gasoline
Butane and other feedstock for petrochemicals

The upgrader/refinery is the only one designed from the ground up to reduce its environmental impact. This foresight means it will be the first to incorporate gasification and carbon capture and storage (CCS), setting an international precedent for responsible development.
