military, early warning radar
Established in 1957 as a Auxiliary Radar Site on the DEW Line, the CAM-3 or Shepherd Bay radar site operated as part of the CAM Sector of the DEW Line under the operational control of the Cambridge Bay/CAM-Main site to the West.
Simultaneously deactivated from its DEW Line operations and activated for service with the North Warning System in July of 1989, the CAM-3 site reused the majority of its DEW Line infrastructure in its new role. Now one of two long-range radar sites in the CAM Sector of the NWS, CAM-3 operates as a minimally-attended facility with AN/FPS-117 radar systems.
