ASB Bridge (Kansas City, Missouri)

USA / Missouri / North Kansas City / Kansas City, Missouri
truss bridge, railway bridge, vertical-lift bridge / lift bridge

The ASB (Armour Swift Burlington) Bridge was built with a lower railroad level and an upper road level. It operated in this fashion from 1911 until 1987, when road traffic was switched to a new bridge. The upper deck was then removed from the bridge, the bridge underwent needed repairs and renovations, and it was turned over to the Burlington Northern. The bridge is now owned by BNSF Railway, and sees a lot of traffic moving between BNSF and Kansas City Southern. America's railroads built 32 crossings over the Missouri River, of which 23 remain in use.

  • One of two of this type ever built.
  • I'm a 48 year old resident of KCMO. I've lived here my entire life. I started driving in 1980 and I commuted from the Northland to 56th and Troost in 1983. I never drove across the top of the ASB bridge. The road deck was closed many years prior to me driving. There was another bridge near where the Heart of America Bridge is now located that carried Route 9 across the river. The deck atop the ASB bridge was closed to traffic well before 1987.
