Lawrence is a city in and the county seat of Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 87,643 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth largest city in the state.

Lawrence is a college town and is the home to the University of Kansas founded in 1865 and the Haskell Indian Nations University.

Site of the Lawrence Massacre or Quantrill's Raid, a Confederate guerrilla attack during the U.S. Civil War led by William Clarke Quantrill, on the pro-Union town of Lawrence, Kansas. Over four hours, the raiders pillaged and set fire to the town and killed most of its male population. Quantrill's men burned to the ground a quarter of the buildings in Lawrence, including all but two businesses. They looted most of the banks and stores and killed between 185 and 200 men and boys.
