The bridge over the Mississippi River is owned by BNSF Railway (previously the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe) and also carries a two lane highway. The first bridge opened here in 1887. This was replaced by the present two level bridge during 1927. The 525-foot swing span is the longest two level swing span in the world. Rail traffic over this bridge has increased to the point where as many as 100 trains a day cross here.
