The original bridge here opened during 1870, allowing the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway to reach Keokuk from Illinois. In 1916, a major rebuilding of the bridge took place, which included a second level for road traffic. It was acquired by the city of Keokuk during 1948, and during 1985 highway traffic was moved off of the bridge onto the new US-136 bridge. www.johnweeks.com/upper_mississippi/pagesB/umissBR04.ht...
