The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad crossed the Mississippi River on a bridge here, which was built in 1868. This connected Kansas City with the east by rail for the first time. From 1899 until 1930 this bridge also carried early road traffic. During 1960 the present railroad bridge to the north opened, allowing the removal of this one.
