The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad completed a bridge across the Mississippi River at Quincy in 1868. The CB&Q along with the Hannibal and St. Joseph were thus able to open the first rail line to Kansas City from Chicago. That bridge was just south of this one, and featured a swing span for river traffic. During 1960 this railroad bridge opened, built higher to allow the river traffic to pass underneath. This bridge is now owned and operated by BNSF Railway.

Railroad bridges were built at 56 locations to cross the Mississippi River,
and 36 of these crossings are still in use by freight railroads. www.trains.com/TRC/CS/forums/535712/ShowPost.aspx
