Originally a Chicago and Alton bridge that opened in 1873, this bridge was rebuilt during 1898 and again in 1945. In 1878 the C&A had the shortest route from Chicago to Kansas City. The bridge has been the property of several railroads over the years, and now belongs to the Kansas City Southern. Railroad traffic crossing over the river here has never been frequent, although it could become busier in the future.
