The original bridge at this location opened during August 1868. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in Illinois and the affiliated Burlington and Missouri River in Iowa teamed up to reach the Missouri River at Plattsmouth in 1869. Increasing traffic on this line led to rebuilding of the bridge in 1892 and 1930. This is now part of a well used BNSF mainline, linking the western states with Chicago. When funding becomes available, the swing span on this bridge will be replaced with a lift span providing a wider channel for river traffic.
