5-story Northern Renaissance-revival residential building originally completed as a private dwelling in the mid-1800s. A major alteration in 1891 by Benjamin E. Lowe for the Missino of the Immaculate Virgin of Mount Loretto included extending the attic to create a full fifth story, and converting the building to a convent. The mission also operated an adjacent dormitory and school at 375-379 Lafayette that was demolished in 1929. 381 Lafayette was owned by the mission until 1965, when it was sold to noted avant-garde artist Robert Rauschenberg, who converted it to his residence and studio. It is currently in use as residential apartments.
