Old Firemen's Hall

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Mercer Street, 155
 condominium  Add category

3-story mercantile building completed in 1854. Designed by Field & Correja as a firemen's hall (a hangout for volunteer firefighters), funded by the New York Volunteer Fire Department. It later served as the firehouse for Hook & Ladder No. 20. This brownstone building was originally decorated with free-standing and relief sculpture, but was radically altered in the late 1900s with a modern facade, with quoins at the corners and segmental-arched windows. The last fire company moved out in 1974. The building was then occupied by various art organizations, and the Joyce Theater until 2012. It was sold in 2013, and there is now a proposal to re-create the original look of the building.
