apartment building, Federal style (architecture), 1820s construction
3.5-story Federal-style residential building originally completed around 1827. In 1883, the building’s original first story was removed and replaced by a storefront with cast-iron columns. The building’s red brick upper floors have been in continual residential use since it was built, making it a rare example of a Federal row house in SoHo that has never been converted to industrial use. A black metal fire escape runs down the front facade. The ground floor is occupied by Hampton Chutney restaurant.
