high-rise, apartment building, 1974_construction
392-foot, 39-story residential building completed in 1974. Designed by Oppenheimer, Brady & Vogelstein with Barry Goldsmith as project designer in the brutalist style as part of the Independence Plaza complex, these towers emphasize verticality and substitute cantilevered corners instead of setbacks. They are clad in brown brick and striated concrete block. Tower II, like the others, is L-shaped and rises out of a 5-story lowrise base, connected by a sloping 4-story intermediate section. The corners are marked by columns of boxy balconies.
